Today Marks 5yrs @ BraveNewCode for Emilio Rivera, Our Support Lead

emilio-5yrs

We first met Emilio in our old support forums for the original WPtouch Pro release, over 5 years ago. Emilio impressed us as a customer whom was jumping into other users’ threads and helping out left, right, and centre. There were times where he seemed to demonstrate a knowledge of the product as if he wrote it— a clear, intrinsic understanding of the intent of the software and the best ways to use it.

We were so impressed we offered Emilio a job with us, and take over the support role for our customers (up until that point Duane and I did it ourselves). He took the plunge, and ever since he’s been making BraveNewCode customers happy with help that frequently goes above and beyond what most expect from software support.

Support can be trying for many people— whether you’re our customer or you’re our employee trying to provide assistance, WordPress’ quirks and quarks, along with server environments, themes, and other plugins make answering seemingly simple questions quite difficult. Emilio has consistently found a way to help customers through difficult circumstances time and time again— and many customers have remarked over the years that Emilio has provided them with the best support they’ve ever received, anywhere. Incredible!

Put simply, his dedication and commitment to excellence in providing quality, care-full support of our products and services is an inspiration for our company.

5 years is a long time in the tech world. Thousands of start-ups have come and gone in that time, and Emilio has continued to provide customers with every growing expertise throughout the growth of our business and maturity of WPtouch. By keeping with us, he has truly attained a mastery in knowing of the world in which he provides help, and I think most customers would be amazed to discover just who they’re getting help from :)

We strive to create great software, and work tirelessly to improve our products everyday. But it is not lost on us that providing customers with timely, smart and supportive help is a big part of what we offer. To that end, we feel confident that Emilio can always be there for our customers when they hit a snag.

To us, he’s the best feature WPtouch has ever gained.

Congratulations on 5 years Emilio— we wish you all the best in continued success with us!

WPtouch 4: Customize your website for mobile devices like never before!

Full Customizer Support

With WPtouch 4, we’ve redesigned our admin panel and added native support for the WordPress customizer.

Unlike responsive themes, you can control exactly what your visitors will see when they visit your website on a mobile device.

Setting up a WPtouch theme has never been easier: Play with colours, fonts, logos in just a few clicks, all while instantly live-previewing your changes.

Experiment with featured sliders, post and page options. Tinker with featured images, social sharing, and menus— and when you’re done, simply save and publish and go live.

New Wizard

In WPtouch 4 we’ve added an all-new setup wizard to guide you through getting started with WPtouch. The wizard makes sure you’re made aware of the things you need to do to get setup quickly, and even helps you along by automatically discovering your WordPress environment.

Use Google Analytics? WPtouch 4 can tell, and will automatically add your analytics code into its themes. Use a different template for posts and your home page? WPtouch will configure them automatically, yet also lets you choose something different (if you want to change it for mobile visitors).

Streamlined Settings

If you’re configuring a theme’s appearance, that’s all done in the WordPress theme customizer now, where it should be. Setting up menus for WPtouch? That’s done in the WordPress menu settings, too. In WPtouch 4 we’ve examined the entire setup process to make more sense for you, and flow logically.

For example, a new user will go through the setup wizard to configure key settings, then on to the customizer to choose appearance settings and experiment with look and feel. Going from activation to publishing your mobile website has never been as clear and easy.

For all the settings that don’t belong in the Customizer Settings, they’re all in one new location, the WPtouch Settings. There you’ll be able to modify the “under the hood” options, along with adding or activating additional themes and extensions.

WPtouch 3.x Support

When you update to a new major version of WPtouch you don’t want to have to setup a theme all over again. In the past we made major changes that we weren’t able to rectify with older WPtouch installations. In WPtouch 4, you don’t have to worry— all 3.x themes running WPtouch 3.5 or newer will “just work” with WPtouch 4.

In development for 4.0, we left 3.x themes intact and worked rigorously to ensure that they could live in the 4.0 world without issue. Our team poured over configurations and different scenarios to ensure that we maintained full backwards compatibility with any custom or copied theme(s) you’re running today.

WPtouch 4 themes offer more control and customizability in the WordPress Customizer, but 3.0 themes will also benefit from the customizer and a variety of their settings will automatically work with the WordPress Customizer when you update to WPtouch 4.0.

Cost

We think WPtouch 4 is by far and away the best version of WPtouch we’ve ever made. After hundreds of releases, 8 million downloads and nearly a decade of work, our team has created the most polished, professional and powerful mobile tool for WordPress websites. And we want to see everyone using it and enjoying it.

When it’s released this fall, we’re happy to announce that WPtouch 4.0 will be a free update for all licensed customers.

Along with 4.0, all new updates for themes and extensions that are included with your license will also be free.

If your license expires soon, renew today to ensure you receive the 4.0 update.

There’s lots more packed into 4.0, and we’ll have some blog posts over the coming weeks to highlight them all.

Not a customer, but interested in receiving updates directly to your inbox? Sign up for the WPtouch mailing list today.
We send out infrequent, periodic updates on what’s new in the WPtouch world.

The add_query_arg vulnerability & WPtouch

On April 20, a vulnerability in certain implementations of WordPress’s add_query_arg and remove_query_arg functions was subject to coordinated disclosure and patches. The vulnerability has been linked to flawed documentation in the WordPress codex.

In the course of a code search looking for the use of these functions across the WordPress.org plugin repository, vulnerable use of these functions was identified in WPtouch Pro’s theme and extension switching routines. This code is present in versions 3 and higher of both the free and Pro editions of WPtouch, though it is only used in the Pro edition.

The release of 3.7.6 of our plugins addresses this vulnerability in WPtouch Pro 3 and also corrects the inactive code in WPtouch 3.

Other plugins affected by this vulnerability included:

  • Jetpack
  • WordPress SEO
  • Google Analytics by Yoast
  • All In one SEO
  • Gravity Forms
  • Multiple Plugins from Easy Digital Downloads
  • UpdraftPlus
  • WP-E-Commerce
  • Download Monitor
  • Related Posts for WordPress
  • My Calendar
  • P3 Profiler
  • Give
  • Multiple iThemes products including Builder and Exchange
  • Broken-Link-Checker
  • Ninja Forms

Although though the free edition of WPtouch includes some of the affected code, it is not executed in the regular operation of the plugin and will not expose users to vulnerability.

Versions of WPtouch and WPtouch Pro predating the 3.x release (such as WPtouch 1.9, and WPtouch Pro 2.x) do not use the add_query_arg and remove_query_arg functions and are also not subject to this vulnerability.

There is no security-related need to automatically update versions of the plugin not affected by this vulnerability.

As always we endorse keeping your WordPress installation and plugins up to date with all released updates.

Not mobile-friendly? Google is about to penalize you!

Since the launch of WPtouch in 2008, mobile web usage has skyrocketed. Around the world ever more customers are shopping, researching, reading, and connecting with their mobile devices. Visitors to websites are becoming ever less tolerant of pinching and zooming, digging through pages overloaded with widgets and sidebars, and waiting for overly complex pages to load.

Google has been working for a few years to encourage website owners to prepare for this shift, producing reports and tools to help understand the challenges and opportunities involved. Most recently, Google’s mobile search results began highlighting sites that are optimized for mobile devices.

As of April 21, Google will be stepping up their pressure on website owners to be ready for mobile visitors. Starting then, sites that Google recognizes as mobile friendly will be pushed to the top of results when searching on a mobile device. Websites that are not ready for mobile visitors will be penalized with lower ranking in results–meaning less traffic, fewer ad views, and less revenue.

Built on seven years’ expertise in optimizing WordPress websites for mobile devices, WPtouch Pro and all of our themes achieve Google’s “Mobile-friendly” rating.

If you want to avoid being penalized on mobile searches on April 21, now is the time to get started with WPtouch, Google’s recommended mobile solution for WordPress website owners.

Auto-updating Themes & Extensions in WPtouch Pro 3.6.3

363-blog

Just in time for Christmas we’ve released a pair of updates to WPtouch and WPtouch Pro. This month our focus has been on making life with WPtouch Pro easier.

Auto-updating themes & extensions

Forget about checking for theme & extension updates – whenever you update WPtouch Pro 3, the plugin will check for available updates and automatically install them for you. If you’ve made changes to one of WPtouch Pro’s official themes, we’ll copy the theme and install a fresh copy of the original for you to copy across any improvements you may wish to apply.

In-plugin license upgrades

You can now purchase a license upgrade from inside the WPtouch Pro plugin to get instant access to features of advanced licenses. If your license is active on more than one site, the upgrade will roll out to the rest of your sites within 20 minutes of your upgrade.

Other updates

  • Added: A little festive spirit with a Christmassy version of our logo!
  • Changed: We slimmed down the plugin package by moving screenshots out of the zip file and into the WordPress repository.
  • Changed: MobileStore looks up the visitor’s location to pre-fill some shipping information. Because this relies on url_fopen being enabled we check for that being enabled before performing a lookup.
  • Fixed: Updated WPtouch’s icon font with a new name to avoid conflicts with other plugins
  • Fixed: Pagination glitch in MobileStore search

If you haven’t tried WPtouch Pro yet, now is a great time to get started!

Choose custom web fonts with the Advanced Typography extension – new with WPtouch Pro 3.6

We carefully select the typefaces to be included in WPtouch Pro’s web font pairings to express a wide variety of personalities that might be appropriate for sites using WPtouch Pro. Although they work for many websites, some site owners have contacted us asking how they can choose their own web fonts from the wide range offered by Google Fonts – or even use fonts from subscription font services. Still others need access to the varied character subsets available through Google Fonts for languages that use cyrillic, greek, or even devangari. To all of you, we are delighted to say: easily, with a few clicks, today. And most importantly: FREE with all WPtouch Pro licenses!

Picking custom fonts with the Advanced Typography extension

With support for the full Google Font library as well as your custom sets from Fontdeck and Typekit, Advanced Typography for WPtouch Pro 3 puts you in complete control of the typographical branding of your website. We’re excited to be able to put this level of fine control in your hands and can’t wait to see what you do with it. Other great new features in WPtouch Pro 3.6 include:

  • More powerful URL filters – select pages that WPtouch Pro ignores or have just a few pages of your website displayed with the WPtouch Pro theme.
  • Web App Mode startup screens for iPhone 6 and 6+.
  • Disable JetPack Jetpack modules (related posts, sharing buttons, like box) when deselected in the plugin compatibility tool.
  • Added fine control of various features, including post type selection for the featured slider, better RTL support, improved gallery handling, and more!

Get started with WPtouch Pro 3.6 by upgrading through the WordPress admin, downloading a copy from the WPtouch Support site, or purchasing your WPtouch Pro license today!
