Auto-updating Themes & Extensions in WPtouch Pro 3.6.3

363-blog

Just in time for Christmas we’ve released a pair of updates to WPtouch and WPtouch Pro. This month our focus has been on making life with WPtouch Pro easier.

Auto-updating themes & extensions

Forget about checking for theme & extension updates – whenever you update WPtouch Pro 3, the plugin will check for available updates and automatically install them for you. If you’ve made changes to one of WPtouch Pro’s official themes, we’ll copy the theme and install a fresh copy of the original for you to copy across any improvements you may wish to apply.

In-plugin license upgrades

You can now purchase a license upgrade from inside the WPtouch Pro plugin to get instant access to features of advanced licenses. If your license is active on more than one site, the upgrade will roll out to the rest of your sites within 20 minutes of your upgrade.

Other updates

  • Added: A little festive spirit with a Christmassy version of our logo!
  • Changed: We slimmed down the plugin package by moving screenshots out of the zip file and into the WordPress repository.
  • Changed: MobileStore looks up the visitor’s location to pre-fill some shipping information. Because this relies on url_fopen being enabled we check for that being enabled before performing a lookup.
  • Fixed: Updated WPtouch’s icon font with a new name to avoid conflicts with other plugins
  • Fixed: Pagination glitch in MobileStore search

If you haven’t tried WPtouch Pro yet, now is a great time to get started!

WPtouch Security Update – Version 3.4.7

Yesterday someone informed us of a potential security issue with file uploads within WPtouch. After investigating, we determined that the code that allows WordPress administrators to upload files needed to be hardened to not accept certain types of files. We’ve included this fix in version 3.4.7, which was released last night for WPtouch Pro as well as the free version of WPtouch.

This issue only affected WordPress administrators who were already logged in, many of whom typically have access to the file system already. When possible, update to 3.4.7 which includes the updated file upload handling with improved security.

Security Fix in WPtouch and WPtouch Pro 3.4.3: Insecure Nonce Generation in WPtouch

Thanks to the folks at Sucuri.net we were made aware last week of a security vulnerability in WPtouch 3.x that allowed logged-in users to upload malicious files to a WPtouch installation.

The issue was fixed in 3.4.3 released over the weekend, before the security issue was publicized, though anyone running WPtouch 3.x or WPtouch Pro 3.x should make sure they’re running the latest version of the plugin to be 100% secure.

The issue does not affect WPtouch 1.x or 2.x users, and only affects 3.x users where an attacker has already logged in (so they require an account with your website to exploit).

Currently, all managed GoDaddy and MediaTemple customers running WPtouch have been automatically updated to the latest version, so if you’re using their services you’re already up to date.

We regularly and routinely scan WPtouch for security vulnerabilities, and we appreciated responsible disclosure of this security issue directly to our team. Folks like Sucuri are great at providing us with information to improve and enhance the security of software, and we’re grateful for the work they do.

WordPress always encourages updating to the latest version as a means of making sure you’re protected against security issues, so make sure you’re running the latest versions of WordPress-related software to ensure your security on your website.

WPtouch Updates: Free goes international, better custom post types, and more!

If you’re running WPtouch on your website, you’ll find something fresh in your admin panel today. Here’s what we’ve been working on for the version 3.3.2 WPtouch update:

Language selection

We are very proud that WPtouch is available in numerous languages – both the administration tools and front-end interface are internationalized. Although we’ve been teasing the availability of the internationalized version to free users, this week’s update brings the multilingual experience to all users of WPtouch.

Custom post types

Custom post type display has been in WPtouch since version 2.5. Although there have been several updates to the feature since then, displaying post types registered in the desktop theme proved challenging. This week’s update to WPtouch completes an overhaul of custom post type support in WPtouch with completely rewritten handling on the admin and display side. Regardless of how and where your post types are registered, they’ll be available for selection and display to your mobile visitors – and you won’t even have to load the desktop theme’s functions.php to make it happen!

Everything else

Support

To make activating sites a little easier, we now display the email address associated with your license alongside your license key.

WPtouch

Forms created with Contact Form 7 are now more usable and better rendered on mobile devices.

When enabled, related posts are now displayed before the next/previous links.

It is now easier to see what features will be available when upgrading from free to pro.

Fixed: Titles sometimes included HTML entities in shared Twitter content.

Fixed: When clicking comment links in Web App Mode (iOS), some visitors reported being kicked into Safari.

Fixed: Open’s display of hours was unclear on early Android devices.

WPtouch adds Windows Phone 8.1, Opera & Firefox Mobile Browser Support

We’ve recently pushed out updates for WPtouch and WPtouch Pro (3.2.4) that add support for a variety of growing mobile devices and browsers, expanding our support of devices and mobile browsers that are growing and maturing.

Windows Phone 8.1

The newly released Windows Phone 8.1 OS update is now fully supported with WPtouch. The new OS update for Windows mobile devices is receiving lots of praise, and we think it’s a great update to the platform.

WPtouch performs even better on devices running the latest update, and customers will be happy to know we have no known issues with WPtouch themes in the browsers available for 8.1.

Opera & Coast

Also included in the update is support for new Opera mobile browsers, including the newly released Opera Coast browser for iOS. It’s a slick and minimal browser, and again WPtouch performs beautifully along with it.

Firefox OS

We’ve also recently added support for Firefox OS, which is quite popular in emerging markets and we want WPtouch working on as many mobile devices as possible.

98%

WPtouch now works on a staggering 98% of all popular mobile devices and platforms, making it one of the most compatible and complete mobile solutions for WordPress.
