Earth Hour WordPress Plugin, 2013 Version Now Available!

Earth Hour 2013 is almost here! This year, Earth Hour will be held on March 23rd from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The yearly event, organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), encourages households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change.

For the past few years we’ve maintained a WordPress plugin that allows you to show your support for the Earth Hour event and “turn off” your website’s lights. During Earth Hour, your website will display an Earth Hour logo and a small customizable message. The message displays on a black background because, according to researchers at the University of California, black uses less energy to display.

The plugin also shows a small customizable fixed bar on your website leading up to the event, which lets visitors know about your participation, and links to the Earth Hour website.

We created the WordPress Earth Hour plugin to show our solidarity with the environmental community in marking the event. Any worthwhile positive change takes concerted efforts by all of us. The Earth Hour plugin symbolizes that belief with a uniform message across many participating WordPress sites leading up to and during the event.

Find out more about Earth Hour for WordPress on the plugin’s official WordPress.org page. Have a happy Earth Hour, everyone!
