Increase Revenue with Multi-Ads, A New Extension For WPtouch

Many of our WPtouch Pro customers are interested in generating revenue from their mobile sites. Even as far back as WPtouch Pro 2.0, we’ve included the ability to have one advertising unit on the page in a user-specified location. As more and more advertising services have adopted mobile-friendly advertising formats, we’ve been repeatedly asked lately to include additional options, such as the ability to display multiple different advertising units on each mobile page.

Introducing Multi-Ads

As such, we are pleased to announce the release of a new WPtouch Pro extension: Multi-Ads. Multi-Ads includes the ability to have up to four advertising units on each page, each independently targeted to a different sub-set of content pages. For example, advertisement units near the header could be configured to only be included on archive pages, which advertisements near the post content could be configured to show on every page. These options are fully configurable by the site administrator for each advertising unit.

Each advertising unit in Multi-Ads is service-agnostic – use whichever service or code you want by simply adding your adverting JS or HTML code for each unit.

In addition, we’ve included the ability to A/B test for each advertising location to help our customers maximize their site revenue. Using this feature, a website owner could specify two different advertising units for each location to determine which unit produces the most revenue. We expect this feature will be used immediately to help our WPtouch Pro customers produce additional advertising revenue from their sites.

Prose: A New Mobile Theme for WPtouch

prose-blog

Introducing Prose

Long-form content on WordPress websites on mobile devices just got a helping hand with Prose, our new mobile theme for WPtouch.

Prose was designed for one thing: showcasing content beautifully on mobile devices. With a focus on typography, color & and simplicity, Prose elegantly displays and organizes content for mobile device visitors, and gets out of the way as a mobile theme.

Delight Your Readers

We’ve included several reading optimizations in Prose:

  • Variable text size that allows readers to enjoy your content whether they need large type or enjoy smaller copy;
  • Hand-tuned typography options that let you personalize the look and feel of your site in more ways than ever;
  • How long is The Piece of String? 8 Minutes! Reading time indicators tell readers how long each post will take to read, encourage them to finish, and turn into a handy share bar when they reach the end of the post.

Off-Canvas Menu

mobile theme

For the first time in WPtouch we’ve added an off-canvas menu to a theme. Prose’s off-canvas menu is smooth, user friendly, and works on all mobile devices.

We really wanted to include an off-canvas solution in WPtouch for quite some time, but found many of the available options out there not quite up to snuff. Either they didn’t work as smoothly as we thought they should, or they didn’t work on all the devices that WPtouch supports.

So— we wrote our own, based on a simple solution called Pushy by Christopher Yee. His solution was for left off-canvas menus specifically, and we extended it into a full-fledged jQuery plugin which works for left, right or both implementations. It also includes a fallback for mobile devices which don’t support CSS transforms.

We’ll be releasing it for free soon on our GitHub repository, but for now you can enjoy the new off-canvas menu in its full glory inside the Prose theme.

Available Today, For Everyone

Prose is a free addition available today for all WPtouch Pro customers and license types! That brings WPtouch’s theme count up to 6— including Classic, Bauhaus, Simple, CMS, Open and now Prose.

Continuity & Features in iOS 8 + OSX with WPtouch

Recently at its WWDC Conference Apple announced new features for iOS 8 that should significantly improve user experience on a number of fronts. We’re looking forward to all these enhancements, especially how they’ll compliment WPtouch-powered websites.

“Handoff”

continuity in iOS and OSX

If you missed it, Apple announced new features which make it easier to move between iOS devices and desktop computers. Handoff was one of them, and with it comes the ability to load webpages synchronously moving between Safari on iOS or Safari on a Mac.

Because WPtouch uses the same URL to load your website content, you can expect Continuity between web browsers on mobile, tablet and desktop computers to work great with WPtouch. Visitors will be able to seamlessly access your content, unlike other services or solutions that use different URLs for mobile webpages.

Speed in Web Apps

Until iOS 8, web-apps and native apps that used web containers did not benefit from the browser engine enhancements previously added to iOS (specifically the Nitro JavaScript engine).

In iOS 8 the gap between Safari website view and web apps is now closed, so WPtouch’s much-loved Web-App mode feature will be faster than ever. We hope additional features might become available for Web-App Mode (since it’s early in the beta releases for iOS) and we’ll add them as they become available.

Credit Cards, Logins

For websites with eCommerce solutions or require login, iOS 8 adds improvements and enhancements that make entering credit card information easier and moving between devices and maintaining logged in states much improved, and any website using WPtouch will be able to benefit from these enhancements automatically.

iOS 8 will be released this fall, and we’ll make sure WPtouch will be updated alongside it to add support for the new features and capabilities.
