WordCamp Victoria 2013 Recap

WordCamp Victoria 2013

I consider myself lucky to be able to kick-off my WordCamp agenda each year in Victoria, my current home town. Of the various WordCamp events I attend annually, it’s always the one I look forward to the most.

As with past years’ events, WordCamp Victoria 2013 didn’t disappoint. WordPress leader, Morten Rand-Hendriksen, entertained and engaged the audience with his 50 minute keynote address titled, ‘Why WordPress’. Rand-Hendricksen’s recipe for making this simple and familiar topic work? Take the obligatory statistics and insights into the history of WordPress and mix with lessons in Norwegian culture, personal anecdotes and humour. Good times!

Other sessions I enjoyed included blogger Rebecca Bollwitt’s Picking Perfect Pics session and Al DavisDeconstructing the Loop presentation–which somehow managed to provide what I felt was the best learning experience of the event even though it took place during the its-almost-time-for-the-after-party 4pm time slot.

WordCamp Victoria 2013 organizers are obviously an experienced bunch who know how to pull off a well run event. Registration went smoothly and the lineups were short, access to wi-fi didn’t appear to be an issue, lunch was on time and nobody’s special dietary concerns were overlooked. Kudos to the WordCamp Victoria organizing team on a job well done!

See you at WordCamp Victoria 2014!

WPtouch Pro Tips Central: 2012 Top Tips

This past year we launched our WPtouch Pro Tips Central blog series; our weekly posts featuring WPtouch Pro-powered sites built and maintained by designers, developers and site owners like you. Since our first Tips Central post in August 2012, our experts have provided tips for 21 sites including our very first WPtouch Pro Top Site award winner, CigarDojo.com!

Below are three of the top tips from our 2012 Tips Central posts. Read our experts’ recommendations and find out how easy it can be to add these enhancements to your WPtouch Pro site.

Note: Links to support documentation are available exclusively to current WPtouch Pro customers who are logged into bravenewcode.com.

TIP #1 – Customize styling with CSS

In addition to the styling options in the WPtouch Pro admin panels, styling can be adding through a WPtouch Pro child theme. In combination with an inspection tool such as the inspector available in most browsers or Firebug, your mobile theme can be made to be a visual extension of your desktop theme by customizing colours, fonts, and more.

TIP #2 – Complete the iOS Web-App Experience

WPtouch Pro offers a one-click method to offer your visitors a native app-like experience. In addition to the many options available, you may also choose to add a custom home screen icon and startup screens for a variety of devices. A custom icon and startup screens are great ways to emphasize your brand while your site content loads.

TIP #3 – Enable iPad Support

WPtouch Pro also offers one-click support for the iPad. Your iPad theme is a separate mobile theme that can be customized independently from your “basic” mobile theme if you want even more control over your mobile experience.
