Changes in WPtouch Pro 3.1 for iOS 7 and WordPress

It’s no secret that we have heavily been cued by iPhone OS for the staple & standard in mobile web’s design direction. While the web on mobile devices has grown, changed and evolved upon multiple platforms, so too has our work and our flagship product, WPtouch.

The release of iOS 7 (while controversial) is a welcome evolution of what we consider the forefront of the mobile web. With WPtouch Pro 3.1 we’ve worked hard to improve and build on out harmony of the product with the platform is most dominantly lives on.

Web-App Mode

An innovative technology in WPtouch Pro unmatched by competitors or responsive design, Web-App Mode in WPtouch Pro allows site visitors on iOS devices to save your website to their home screens. And unlike regular web bookmarks, Web-App Mode does away with the browser, and instead offers a much-more native app feel to your WPtouch Pro powered WordPress website.

Full screen, immersive and gorgeous— WPtouch Pro’s Web-App Mode is a customer favourite and is just a few clicks in the WPtouch Pro admin panel to enable.

Merged Header

iOS 7 and WordPress

In WPtouch Pro 3.1, themes that detect iOS 7 in Web-App Mode will adopt a native merged header appearance, in line with native apps on the platform which have been updated for the new interface. No settings or configuration is needed, WPtouch Pro themes detect iOS 7 and serve up the new style.

Bauhaus Cool

iOS 7 and WordPress

Our new default and flagship theme Bauhaus takes subtle design hints from iOS 7 and WordPress, including circles for featured images in post listings and partial borders, along with circular comment avatars and a preference throughout for for thinner typography and simple design differentiation of elements and colours. It’s the closest yet to an iOS WordPress theme, but it’s so much more than that. New branding options give you the control to transform this theme into appearing vastly different— it’s truly a chameleon-like theme.

iOS 7 and WordPress 3.8, Too!

Coming soon in our 3.1.2 update is a refreshed admin appearance as well, that harmoniously works with WordPress 3.8. WPtouch Pro 3.1 is a free update for all existing customers. You can update to 3.1 through the WordPress admin panel like any other plugin on the plugins page.

Thanks for the info. Do you anticipate updating/modifying any of the theme files in 3.1.2? Or will they stay as they are in 3.1.1?

There will be minor modifications to Bauhaus.

    Looks great!

Any news on when you’ll be adding support for Firefox OS?

Well globally Firefox OS is quite low in browser market share— as it picks up we’ll likely add support. It’ll have to be over 5% to warrant the time for development and support I think.

How do we make our site on the desktop look like this mobile theme? Seems like a jarring disconnect when people switch over because the sites would look so different. Do you have desktop themes too included?

    Hi Robert,

Our themes are highly customizable— by adding your logos, colors, and choosing between a variety of options you can ‘pair’ the mobile theme harmoniously to look and feel like your desktop theme’s appearance.

    Hi Dale,

I’m on the Web Compatibility Team at Mozilla. It doesn’t require any specific development in the sense that Firefox on Android is already working nicely with WPTouch from my own test. The trigger here is just the user agent.

In a classical chicken ad egg issue, the 5% market share can’t be reached/will not be reached if everyone is not fixing their Web site ;) This morning we got a fix from Yahoo! main site :) Quite cool.

    Thanks for any help.

Hey Dale. I have Agency subscription. Was interested in forcing a site to always use the mobile theme Classic or Simple. Is there anyway to force this? I don’t ever want to show the Desktop version. Thanks. Maybe there is a way to upload the Classic or Simple theme to themes directory so the desktop version is the same? Thoughts?

You mean forcing it 100% of the time? To accomplish that, you’d want to add some custom user agents so that it matches all desktop requests e.g. (safari, firefox,ie,opera). Second, you’d want to turn off the switch link in the Core Settings of WPtouch, that way visitors couldn’t switch to the desktop theme, whatever it is.
